Board of Regents Honors DSU Student Organizations

The South Dakota Board of Regents gave awards to three student organizations from Dakota State University at their meeting on the DSU campus October 20. The DSU student groups receiving awards were:

Award for Academic Excellence - Phi Beta Lambda is a national collegiate organization with a mission to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. PBL fulfills its mission by providing workshops, speakers, leadership conferences, and competitive events. Through these events members learn about the business environment and are able to apply what they have learned in class through competitions.

Community Service Award - The South Dakota Education Association’s Student Program gives future educators an opportunity to work with children and be active in the community. Members go into local classrooms to read to children, interact with students, and observe classroom instruction. SDEA participated in various Out Reach to Teach projects, both nationally and statewide. As community volunteers, the group planted trees, flowers, and shrubs around the outside of area schools.

Award for Organizational Leadership - Members of the Student Association Senate meet weekly and serve on a variety of campus committees. Senators assist with thefall orientation program and play a large part in the campus-wide student convocation which takes place each semester. The Senate also organized efforts to begin a campus recycling program. In response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster the group organized and held a community-wide relief effort to raise money for the Red Cross fund. Members of the Senate also attended Students for Higher Education Days. While at the state’s capital, they lobbied for bills, networked with local legislators, and observed the process of legislation for higher education in South Dakota.
